Seeds of Hope: Restoring Avathi Betta (Bengaluru)

Some landscapes carry stories that can only be understood by listening to the people who have lived with them for generations. At the beautiful Avathi Betta Hills near Bengaluru, an Ecological Restoration Workshop brought together local farmers, families, children and nature enthusiasts with a shared intention, to understand the changing landscape and take the first steps towards restoring it.

The initiative began with surveys, landscape observations and interactive sessions with farmers from the neighbouring villages. Their experiences revealed a growing concern: during the monsoon, soil from the exposed hill slopes was being washed downhill and deposited in agricultural fields at the foothills. The resulting accumulation of sand and silt was affecting farmland, while the hills themselves were steadily losing valuable topsoil.

Conversations with local communities also helped uncover the history of the landscape. The hills had once supported considerably more vegetation, including fodder plants that provided cover and helped hold the soil together. Over time, prolonged grazing and the gradual loss of vegetation cover left large stretches of the slopes exposed. With fewer roots anchoring the soil, rainwater could move more freely across the slopes, accelerating erosion.

The workshop therefore focused on practical, nature-based measures to help restore the hill. Stone bunds were created at suitable locations to slow water flow and check soil movement. Seeds were dispersed across appropriate areas to encourage vegetation recovery, while young native plants were established and mulched to conserve moisture and protect the soil surface.

Children and families participated enthusiastically, turning restoration into an engaging outdoor learning experience. Working alongside farmers, participants experienced the landscape not simply as visitors, but as partners in its healing.

Ecological restoration is rarely an overnight transformation. It is a patient process of understanding what has changed, supporting natural recovery and allowing vegetation, soil and biodiversity to gradually return.

The day at Avathi Betta was therefore more than a workshop. It was a reminder that restoration begins with listening, observing and caring, and that even a stone placed to slow erosion, a seed sown, or a sapling nurtured can become part of a larger journey towards a healthier and more resilient landscape.

Mission - To design and implement nature-based solutions that restore ecosystems, regenerate resources, and create sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations.
