Biodiversity Pond Bank Stabilization Work (Pune)

Rooting the Banks, Protecting the Biodiversity Lake (in Pune)

A pond/ lake is more than a body of water. It is a living ecosystem- a place where water, soil, plants, insects, birds and countless other forms of life come together. To protect this delicate balance, we took another small but meaningful step: cover plants (trailing/ creeping herbs) were planted along the sides of the biodiversity lake to help stabilize and protect its banks.

Bare soil along a pond/ lake edge is vulnerable. Rain, flowing water and wind can gradually loosen the soil, causing erosion and allowing precious stop soil to slip into the water thus leading to siltation. Over time, this can weaken the banks and affect the health of the aquatic ecosystem.

The humble cover plants offer and natural solution. Their roots weave through the soil, creating a living network that helps hold the bank together, reduce erosion and slow the movement of rainwater. Their foliage protects the soil surface, while the growing vegetation gradually creates a greener, more resilient edge to the lake.

But their role goes beyond soil stabilization. As these plants grow, they will provide shelter and habitat for insects and small creatures, add organic matter to the soil and contribute to the wider web of biodiversity around the water body.

What looks like a simple act of planting is, in reality an investment in the future of the lake. Roots hold the soil. Plants help protect the water. Vegetation creates habitat. Biodiversity strengthens the ecosystem.

Mission - To design and implement nature-based solutions that restore ecosystems, regenerate resources, and create sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations.
