Soil and Water Conservation Workshop in School (Bengaluru)

Introducing Permaculture to Young Minds (Bengaluru)
A hands-on learning experience with students of Classes 8 and 9 at a Government School in Yeliyur, Devanahalli, Bengaluru, introduced them to the ethics and principles of permaculture and sustainable living-not simply as concepts to be learnt, but as ways of understanding and caring for the world around them.
The sessions explored the fundamentals of organic farming, soil health, mulching, and soil and water conservation. The students also learnt that even small interventions, when thoughtfully designed, can make a meaningful difference.
The school had a young Miyawaki forest, but the plantation was struggling due to inadequate watering. The soil around the plants was bare and exposed, and some roots were directly exposed to the harsh sun. Rather than simply discussing the problem, the students became part of the solution. They enthusiastically collected dry leaves from around the school and learnt how these could be used as natural mulch to protect the soil, retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and gradually return organic matter to the earth.
Simple earthworks and water-conservation interventions were introduced, along with small experiments that allowed the students to observe how soil holds water, how its temperature changes, and how moisture behaves under different conditions. Learning moved beyond the classroom and into the soil beneath their feet.
The most rewarding part was seeing curiosity turn into participation. The students touched the soil, observed, experimented, asked questions, and discovered that caring for nature can begin with something as simple as a handful of dry leaves.
The hope behind these sessions was not merely to teach a few techniques, but to plant an idea that might stay with them for life-that healthy soil, water, plants, and people are deeply connected, and that each of us has the ability to care for that connection through small, thoughtful actions.

Mission - To design and implement nature-based solutions that restore ecosystems, regenerate resources, and create sustainable livelihoods for present and future generations.
