Learning Sustainable Living Through Action (Bengaluru)
A simple school-day situation at a Government School in Yeliyur, Devanahalli, Bengaluru, became an opportunity to introduce students of Classes 8 and 9 to the ethics and principles of sustainable living, responsible waste management, and conscious consumption.
During the lunch break, an ice-cream vendor arrived at the school and, naturally, became quite popular. Almost every child bought an ice cream-and within minutes, the wrappers were scattered across the school surroundings. Instead of treating the incident simply as a cleanliness issue, it became the starting point for a practical lesson.
The students were divided into two enthusiastic teams: boys versus girls, and challenged to turn discarded concrete debris lying nearby into two functional waste bins. The competition brought out their creativity, teamwork, and determination. Both teams worked with great enthusiasm and eventually constructed strong, stable, and remarkably robust bins from what would otherwise have remained construction waste.
With the bins in place, the next lesson began: What is dry waste? What is wet waste? Why should they be separated? What happens when waste is mixed? The students learnt about waste segregation and the importance of reducing unnecessary plastic use, not through a classroom lecture, but through something they had experienced themselves.
What began with ice-cream wrappers ended with a lesson in responsibility, resourcefulness, and citizenship. The children discovered that waste is not always simply “waste”; with awareness and imagination, even discarded materials can find a useful purpose.
Most importantly, the lesson was joyful. The students participated, competed, built, laughed, and learnt together. The hope was that this simple experience would stay with them long after the workshop was over,
becoming a good habit, a conscious choice, and perhaps a small step towards raising more responsible citizens who understand that caring for their surroundings begins with their own everyday actions.
